Workshop 2012

Piet Groenendijk

Piet Groenendijk was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1949. He studied at the Amsterdam Instituut voor Schilderkunst.

In 2000, he received a Rembrandt Painting Award nomination. In 2005, he participated in the Katwijk Summer Painting Festival. He has done several work stays in New York. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including the Vaals Museum (Netherlands), Art Mayence Mainz (Germany) and at the Dean Johnson Gallery Indianapolis (USA). He lives and works in Amsterdam.

Piet regularly paints en plein air. He enjoys the challenge of the limitations inherent in this method: the ticking clock, the changing light. He especially likes working this way in Lamu where the light is intense, and a rather different palette is required to capture its effects. Piet’s first trip to the island was in 2011 as part of the Lamu Painters Festival. He is glad to return, explore further and paint more in the quieter, freer environment of the residency program.
